A very nice tree for shoreland restorations. The river birch has cinnamon to salmon colored bark that peels. It is long-lived, moderately fast growing and disease resistant. It prefers moist to well-drained soil but is also tolerant of drought. It will grow in a variety of soils but is intolerant of shade.
