Basswood is a moderately fast growing tree with heart-shaped, sharp-toothed leaves and a large spreading crown. A mature tree can reach 60-80', is shade tolerant, and will grow in a variety of soils but prefers moist soils. Wildlife Food & Cover:Good food-nectar, animal browse. Fair cover-nesting, perching. Flowers: Yellow fragrant inconspicuous Fruit: Small winged nutlet with bracts Ecosystem: Mesic (Moist) Oak Forest, Maple Basswood Forest, White Pine Hardwood Forest, Lowland Hardwood Forest Other: Dark green foliage, fat red-orange buds help with identification.
