Failing septic systems can leak harmful chemicals and bacteria, putting people, drinking water, and lakes and rivers at risk. ACD has grant funding available to repair failing septic systems at low-income homes throughout Anoka County. Grants are only available for the repair or replacement of SSTS, including septic systems, that have been deemed to pose an imminent threat to public health or safety or that are failing to protect groundwater. A notice of non-compliance must have been issued by the appropriate permitting agency (typically the city or township).

ACD receives Septic System grant funds annually from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Board of Water and Soil Resources. The grant funds are directly used to repair non-compliant septic systems among homeowners who meet low-income thresholds. Enough grant funds are available each year to fix two or three septic systems. For those who don't qualify, several loan programs are available through Anoka County. Funds often arrive around February and may be consumed by early spring or sooner.
